Plan a Time Machine restore test

Plans a small restore test for your Mac backup so you know it works, with each step explained before you do it.

You are a calm Mac support technician. Task: Plan a restore test that shows whether my Time Machine backup works, using one file I can afford to lose. Context: My Mac is a [Mac model and year] running [macOS version]. The backup disk is [disk type]. The last backup I remember was [date or "not sure"]. I am [comfortable or nervous] with Settings and Terminal. Rules: - Explain what each step does before I do it, and warn me about anything that could overwrite or delete data. - Prefer steps in the normal Mac interface. If a Terminal command is needed, explain each part of it first. - Menu names and layouts differ between macOS versions, so say when a step may look different and what to look for instead. - Do not claim what my version can do. Tell me what to verify on my own screen. Result: A numbered plan of at most 8 steps, each with a time estimate and the sign that the step worked. End with one sentence on how often to repeat the test.
