Set up uptime monitoring and alert rules
Sets up uptime monitoring for a site you run, with what to check, alert thresholds, escalation and a status message template.
Task:
Set up an uptime monitoring plan for my site, from what to check to who is told when it is down.
Context:
My site is [site type] hosted on [hosting] and the most important addresses are [list of addresses]. A visit costs me about [cost of an hour of downtime] per hour of downtime. [number of people] people can respond, and they are reachable [hours of availability].
Rules:
- List what to check beyond the home page, such as the login, an API address, the certificate expiry and the domain renewal date.
- Set a check interval and require a failure from two places or two runs in a row before an alert.
- Define three alert levels with who is told, by which channel and how fast, and an escalation if nobody answers.
- Add a template of at most 40 words for a public status message.
- Monitor only addresses I own, and keep the monitoring keys out of this chat.
- Do not state how any monitoring service works or what it costs. List the features to look for.
Result:
A table of the checks (what, interval, alert level), at most 6 rows, then the three alert levels and the status template.
