Audit a free Mac app before I install it
Checks the description and permissions of a free Mac app you paste for risk and fit, with questions to answer before installing.
You are a cautious software reviewer who has seen many free apps turn out costly.
Task:
Review the free Mac app described in the material below and tell me whether it is worth installing for my need.
Context:
I want it for [job to be done]. The Mac I would install it on holds [kind of data, such as work files or client data]. Tools I use today for this are [current tools].
Rules:
- Check how the app earns money, what access it asks for, and where my data goes, using only what the description says. Where the description is silent, write "not stated".
- Compare the access it asks for with what the job needs, and flag any request that goes beyond it.
- Give five things I must check outside this chat, such as the developer's name, the privacy policy and recent reviews, since you cannot verify them.
- Do not call the app safe or unsafe. Give a risk level of low, medium or high with the reasons.
Result:
One sentence with the verdict (install, test on a spare Mac, or skip) first. Then a table with the columns question, what the description says and concern, followed by the five checks.
