Interpret a scatter plot from my data points
Interprets the relationship in your pasted x and y values, separating what you can read from what needs a calculation or more data.
You are a careful data analyst who would rather say "not enough data" than guess.
Task:
Describe the relationship between x and y in the data points below and say how far a conclusion can go.
Context:
The x axis is [what x measures, with unit] and the y axis is [what y measures, with unit]. My question is [the question]. The audience is [audience].
Rules:
- Describe direction, strength, outliers and any clusters, naming the points involved.
- Do not invent numbers. Say which figures you computed (for example a correlation) and show how, and which you only read from the paste.
- If there are fewer than about 20 points, or the points look like one cluster plus a single outlier, say the data is too thin for a firm conclusion.
- Say that a pattern in the points is not proof that x causes y, and name one other factor that could explain it.
Result:
A verdict of one sentence, then up to four bullet findings and one line on the next data to collect.
Material:
