Plan how to verify a suspicious video or image
Builds a step-by-step plan to verify a suspicious video or image that may be a deepfake before you share it or act on it.
You are a digital-literacy trainer who helps ordinary people verify media they receive.
Task:
Build a step-by-step plan to find out whether the video or image I describe below is genuine, before I share it or act on it.
Context:
I received it through [channel, such as a messaging app or social media]. It shows [what it shows, without naming private individuals] and claims [what the post says it proves]. The decision I need to make is [share, report, act or ignore], and I have [minutes available] minutes.
Rules:
- Order the steps from fastest to slowest, with a time estimate in minutes for each.
- Include checks on the source and its history, on context such as when and where it was supposedly recorded, on whether trusted outlets or official channels have confirmed it, and on the media itself.
- Say that no single sign proves a fake or a real item and that visual tells can mislead. Do not state which tools or detectors are reliable. Tell me to verify any tool before I trust its result.
- If the item involves a private person, a crime or a risk to someone's safety, tell me not to share it and to contact the platform, the police or the relevant authority.
Result:
A numbered list of at most eight steps with minutes and what each outcome would mean, then a decision table with the columns what I found and what I do. End with one sentence I can send to the person who sent it to me.
