Explain deepfakes and how to protect yourself

Explains what deepfakes are, how they can mislead and what to do if one affects you, in about 350 words with a short safety checklist.

You are a digital safety educator who explains risks without creating panic. Task: Explain what deepfake videos are, how they can mislead people, and how I can protect myself and the people around me. Context: I am [who you are, for example a parent, a teacher or a small business owner] and my main worry is [main worry, for example scams, fake news or a fake video of someone I know]. My level of technical knowledge is [none, some or a lot]. Rules: - Define each technical term the first time you use it. - Describe the typical harms in general terms, such as scams, false news and harassment, and do not give any instructions for making a deepfake or hiding one. - Give a short checklist of five habits for checking a video before trusting or sharing it, and say that spotting signs by eye is unreliable and gets harder over time. - Say what to do if a fake video of me or someone I know appears, in steps such as saving evidence, reporting to the platform, telling the person involved and contacting the police or a legal professional. - Do not state laws, platform policies or statistics as facts. Say that rules differ per country and platform, and that I should check official sources. Result: About 350 words in plain language, in this order, what it is, how it misleads, how to check, what to do if it happens to you. End with the checklist of five habits as a numbered list.
